It is not often that we take the time to truly appreciate our natural gifts and abilities – our born senses given to us through the creation of our bodies and our consciousness.
Instead we race around at a break-neck speed completing daily tasks and getting on with life, taking for granted the senses we use to tick off our ‘to-do-lists’ and finalise the mindless necessities of living.
But a truly remarkable thing happens when you sit within nature and connect to Mother Earth and your surroundings; your senses come alive! One at a time and all at once the feelings of the five senses…sight, smell, sound, touch & taste…awaken and sharpen. They begin to respond and perceive the world around you in perfect harmony, bringing a sense of purpose; an unexpected sense of peace and understanding – and joy!
There are so many lessons and such joy that can be gleaned from sensing and just ‘being’ in the world around you rather than just ‘doing’ in the world around you, especially within nature.
With your sense of sight, you can see a collaboration of elements and beings working together in unison to create an ecosystem, all with their own function in that system. You can see survival and the passing of time all within the various mixture of the landscape around you.
A spiderweb, seen only if you shift your focus from a distant stare to a nearer perception. A pivotal lesson to remember when attempting to achieve any goal in life. That long-term goals are achieved through multitudes of smaller, short terms ones. That sometimes we need to shift our focus to see what is right in front of us.
The passing of time, but more importantly – survival. Where each tree or branch had fallen and produced decay, new growth can always be seen. A reminder that with the passing of time, a new beginning is always possible, and that energy is never destroyed, but merely transformed.
Sitting and sniffing the wind and feeling into the sense of the smell can bring many memories and emotions to the surface. With the olfactory settings of the nasal passages sparking interest, grief, joy and happiness with each whiff of passing curiosity, you can feel the stirrings with your heart, mind and solar plexus, triggering an understanding of how important sense is to memory.
The old & new merged within the sense of smell as the decay of the leaves and branches reach out, aligning with the smell of fresh roots and grasses beginning to take form from the nutrients of the destruction. A lesson and a message, that with every end, there is always a new beginning.
Foreign and invading smells will bear down, attempting to distract from the feelings (eg: smoke, car excrement, sunscreen, body odour, BBQ), remining us of the importance of being able to filter the external distractions and desires and focus into oneself to feel into your own body’s response to the joy around it.
The most prevalent sense to override your system and allow you to be completely aware of every movement, change and symphony of the world and Mother Earth.
The busyness of ‘noise’ all around you can be heard as a reminder of how intense the hustle and bustle of life can be and how important it is to stop and slow down through meditation and mindfulness. The echo of hurried footsteps, the rushing or water, the unexpected loud imposing noises, all bombarding this sense and invading the peace and tranquillity. A reminder to pause and appreciate more often.
The sound of communication all around between all living things. A gentle humming and buzz of the vibration of Mother Earth, the tweet and squawk of the birds as they talk to one another. The incredible ability for a species to share their thoughts, ideas, beliefs, dreams, concerns and fears.
A magical sense that allows joy in the highest form through intimacy and connection. Allowing you to experience the world in a textural and kinaesthetic way.
A vine wrapped precariously around a tall, sturdy tree feeling flimsy and weak to the touch but upon closer inspection realising the potential and power of the small vine to posses and overcome the tree. A David and Goliath battle as a reminder to always stand up for what is right and that even the smallest can have a mighty impact.
An exploration of textures that can defy logic and rational perception. A smooth-looking thorn producing a sharp sting and prick. A hard and rough rock when handled showing a withering and brittleness of age, crumbling beneath that touch. A reminder that image is a perception only and true beauty and strength is found within.
The most enjoyable sense that can bring not just pure joy but also undeniable comfort. The sense of companionship and social engagements. A sense used to quench and satiate the body, the mind and our emotions.
The taste of the air, filtering the universal life force energy of your surroundings and offering you a glimpse of ‘life as breath’. The taste of the coolness on the inside of your mouth and the offer of tomorrow and the future. A reminder of the life itself
The sweet nectar of ripened fruit and berries, found within nature and sustaining life through nutrition and decadence. An experience of joy through sweet, sour, salty and savoury tones and notes. Showing that Mother Earth will always provide that which we need to be nourished.
So next time you are sitting still and connecting to Mother Earth…open to the joy of the senses! Allow your mind and body to tune into your natural born abilities and senses and allow them to show you the world in its purest form and perceive the world around you in perfect harmony. Allow the experience to bring an unexpected sense of peace and understanding – and joy!
